Amenity and industrial sector managers often face a choice between high-cost, labour-intensive manual control and generic herbicide application. ICL commissioned this guide to provide a modern, scientifically validated standard for their professional clients.

Brief

Advanced Invasives consulted on the development of a modular guide to:

  1. Educate professionals on the ecological and economic impacts of both UK native weeds and Invasive Non-Native Plants (INNPs).

  2. Identify effective species-specific treatment strategies for all key INNP functional groups, including annuals (e.g. Himalayan Balsam), short-lived perennials (e.g. Giant Hogweed), long-lived perennials including (e.g. Bracken) and woody weeds and trees (e.g. Buddleja & Rhododendron).

  3. Establish Integrated Pest Management (IPM) standards to reduce pesticide loading and CO2 emissions across the weed control sector.

  4. Promote vocational excellence by emphasising the need for NPTC/Lantra training and adherence to The Amenity Standard.

What we did

The project synthesised academic, commercial and industrial R&D into a practical, multi-species toolkit for 14 UK native weeds and INNPs:

  1. IPM implementation strategy – detailed how to combine preventative biosecurity with targeted mechanical and chemical controls to reduce overall pesticide use.

  2. Detailed identification resources – for effective ID of each species.

  3. Phenological treatment calendars – created detailed growth-stage calendars for each species to identify the exact months when treatments will yield effective control.

  4. Labor v cost indexing – identified that labour – not the product – is the biggest financial drain, and that high-efficacy treatments are more sustainable because they require fewer return visits.

  5. Alternative control audit – provided a ‘reality check’ on non-chemical methods, for example highlighting that Knotweed is thermally resistant, making burning an ineffective, unsustainable and polluting alternative.
