In 2010, the annual cost of managing Japanese Knotweed in the UK was estimated at approximately £170 million. Despite this significant economic impact, there were no large-scale field or pot-based experiments that accounted for multi-metre horizontal rhizome (root) extent of the plant or tracked control efficacy over a sufficient duration (more than 2 years). This information vacuum allowed for the use of untested, expensive, and ineffective control methods across the industry.

The research program aimed to:
Conduct the world’s largest and most comprehensive infield assessment of Knotweed control methods.
Identify and define best practices for effective long-term management.
Address the lack of empirical data in the UK Environment Agency’s ‘Knotweed Code of Practice’ and industry standards.
What we did
The project integrated long-term field research with high-level policy and industry engagement:
The Global Field Trial – researchers tested 19 different marketed treatment methods (including physical, chemical, and integrated approaches) on 225m2 plots over several years.
Development of 'The 4-Stage Model' – by linking herbicide selection and application to the plant’s seasonal source-sink energy flows, the team defined a new model for physiochemical control. This model identifies the optimal timing for glyphosate application to maximise herbicide translocation into the rhizome system.
Inefficacy of physical methods – the study empirically demonstrated that purely physical methods – such as mowing, strimming, hand-digging, or covering – are ineffective and likely to increase the risk of accidental spread.
Key Outcomes
The research has fundamentally revolutionised the invasive species industry and UK legal practice:
Scientific benchmarking – the study identified glyphosate as the most effective and sustainable herbicide for Knotweed control when applied according to the 4-Stage Model.
Policy & legal Impact – the findings triggered a comprehensive overhaul in how the UK legal sector considers Knotweed, including updates to the Law Society’s TA6 Property Information Form. It also established a new judicial benchmark for the ‘measured duty of care’ in civil court cases.
Infrastructure adoption – major infrastructure operators, including Network Rail and the Welsh Government, adopted the 4-Stage Model, achieving over 95% control across thousands of assets and significantly reducing the total volume of herbicide used and CO2 generated.
Economic stabilisation – by providing mortgage lenders with scientific certainty regarding outcomes of long-term control of Knotweed, the research helped de-risk otherwise ‘blighted’ properties.
Summary
This research project provided the empirical data necessary to end decades of ineffective and costly Japanese Knotweed management. By developing the '4-Stage Model' and debunking ineffective physical control methods, the work of Dr Jones and the team at Swansea University and Complete Weed Control has provided a sustainable, scientifically robust framework that is now the gold standard for legal, economic, and environmental practitioners across the UK.
