As a global leader in agricultural science, Bayer required a definitive evidence base to understand the biological and legal landscape of Japanese Knotweed management. This was critical for assessing the long-term sustainability of herbicide products and supporting their use in sensitive amenity and environmental sectors.

Brief

Advanced Invasives (Ai) was commissioned to produce a three-part strategic review to:

  1. Consolidate global scientific literature on Knotweed ecology and management.

  2. Evaluate the sustainability of current treatment methods using a custom ‘Sustainability Index’.

  3. Audit the legislative environment and public perception challenges, particularly regarding the potential withdrawal of glyphosate.

  4. Map the distribution and ‘invasion curve’ status of Knotweed in key global markets.

What we did

The project utilized Ai’s proprietary research (including the world’s largest field trial) to create a multi-dimensional report:

  1. Scientific synthesis – summarised the Swansea University field trial (Jones et al. 2018), proving the unique efficacy of late-season glyphosate application over 19 other treatment protocols.

  2. Sustainability Indexing – developed Part B of the report, which appraised treatments based on labour intensity, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact.

  3. International benchmarking – created national ‘Country Profiles’ (e.g., Germany, Italy, US) to compare ‘best practice’ guidance and highlight the UK’s lead in evidence-led management.

  4. Policy advocacy support – provided data-led ‘personas’ and real-world use cases to demonstrate how the loss of glyphosate would negatively impact the property market and public infrastructure.

Key Outcomes

The report provided Bayer with a robust, peer-reviewed foundation for their strategic decision-making and stakeholder engagement.

  1. Definitive evidence base – confirmed that glyphosate is the only viable tool for effective long-term management of established Knotweed stands countering ‘anecdotal’ and/or overly critical reporting.

  2. Global insight – delivered a comprehensive understanding of how different nations handle the ‘property blight’ associated with the plant, aiding Bayer's international product positioning.

  3. Strategic alignment – established a clear link between plant biology (the ‘source-sink’ window) and product efficacy, ensuring that the company's guidance remains at the forefront of ‘best practice’ globally.
